Out of Town

I have been such a good girl, resting up and following the doctors orders. It's not like me to sit and do nothing, absolutley nothing. It drives me crazy. I hate not having half a dozen things on the go to think about and accomplish. It seems like such a waste of time to while away the hours, day after day, doing sod all. I know it has to be this way to get myself back to a fully functioning human being but still, it's hard.

So what has kept me on the straight and narrow? This coming week has. Later this week I am off to London again, yipee. The trip has been in the planning for several months now, but finally, all the details are settled, right down to the arrival times.

I am so excited. I am finally going to meet Laney. I know most of you visit her site too and so have already read about it, but for those that haven't; I have known Laney for about 2 years now, first meeting her elsewhere online, and very quickly we became great friends, swapping emails and mobile numbers and keeping in regular contact. She was the one who convinced me to start blogging, and although until recently, it was taking over all my spare time, I am so glad I did. I have met so many wonderful people here, most of them genuine, caring souls, that I can't imagine ever not blogging.

This week, I get to meet not just Laney, but also the very first visitor of my very first blog post, (not counting Elaine), a wonderfully vibrant woman who still takes the time and trouble to visit me. She and her partner are American and are travelling at the moment, a trip they have taken to celebrate 30 years together. Later this week they are visiting London for a few days and Laney and I are going to meet them together. I can't wait. I have never met anyone from blogland before and I am so glad that it should be my best friend and my first visitor that I meet up with.

I am sure we will have a ball and there will be plenty of photographic evidence of our gathering. I can just see us now, after the trip, photoshop open and trying to conceal the faces of those who don't show their image on their blog, that'll just leave Elaine then!

So, fingers crossed I can actually stay awake for a whole day at a time and of course I will blog it when I get back and have caught up on my rest.

Hope you all have a great week and thanks for your continued support. x

Fleeting Visit

Firstly, I need to thank all of you lovely people that have taken the time to stop by, and leave comments on my 'I is for ...' post, and apologise for not having responded to you all individually.

Secondly I need to apologise for not having gotten around to seeing all of your efforts for last Wednesdays ABC posts.

The reason - I have not been feeling too bright. I mentioned this briefly in my Bins and Boreds post, and now that all the blood tests I had done have come back as normal my GP has diagnosed 'Post Viral Fatigue' or PVF.

Having looked it up since the diagnosis, I found out it is the new name for ME. The symptoms are extremely varied, and any combination of them can be suffered daily, changing from one day to the next.

There is no treatment. Rest does not improve ME but physical and/or mental activity aggravates it and increases the level of suffering. The only 'treatment' is a course of well structured exercise, in increasing levels. At the moment, I am not able to do more than about half an hour morning and afternoon without it causing me to be totally and completely helpless the following day. Recovery could take several weeks.

It is also a disease that once recovered from, is highly likely to relapse at any given moment for several years to come.

I am not looking for sympathy, although I have to admit when I read up on it I felt a little blown away, but I wanted you all to know that I am still around, and that just because I haven't left comments on your blogs it doesn't mean I haven't thought about you all. I am missing blogland like crazy. I am hoping in the next few days to look at all the brilliant 'I' posts, although I may not be able to comment on them all, and I will endeavour to at least post once a week for ABC.

OK, am going for a lay down now... lol... love you all. x

Result!

The GCSE Results were sent out yesterday!!

As some of my longer term visitors will know I took a GCSE in Photography last year and I have been anxiously awaiting the results.

We received this email this afternoon from our tutor:

Dear Photographers,

Well done on the fantastic results this year!!

What a clever lot you all are.
I've never had quite such good results from a GCSE group before so give yourselves a pat on the back, and keep making pictures!!
Sorry no news on A/S level yet but we have had 35 gcse applications so hopefully will be able to split this into gcse and an AS group

Well! That set the mind wondering, as we hadn't actually had them through the post, I expect they will hit tomorrow.

So, cheeky, impatient, exciteable madam that I am, I emailed him back and asked him what I got.

The suspense was killing me!!

He quickly replied...

that I got...

an...

WOOHOO, I am chuffed to bits. Finally I have the A grade I was cheated out of at school, and I have been looking very much like a cheshire cat most of the afternoon.

Edit:
I had SAR training tonight, the second part of the first aid, and I officially passed my First Aid at Work course!!!

My Better Half - pt2

Following on from last Mondays part 1 which can be read here... and ended:

..... That was the first time I really saw his softer side. He liked to keep this personality trait well under cover. He didn’t like people to realise that it existed and rarely displayed it in public.....

At some time in the next couple of months, whilst we were at a small, village located disco, a friend of mine, M, took a shine to G. My boyfriend and I gave them a little encouragement, shall we say, and they started dating. For me it was great, I figured that if he was dating M, I might get to interact with him more often. Strangely, I don’t remember ever feeling jealous, although I was fully aware of my own feelings for him, I had a boyfriend, and a son to consider, and I knew that nothing would ever happen between G and I. I also knew that I would never do anything to orchestrate a situation, or allow him to guess that I had any kind of feelings for him whilst I was committed to another relationship.

Theirs was not a not a match made in heaven. I remember hearing G comment on the fact that the beer goggles he was wearing the night of the disco were the worst he had ever worn. He didn’t fancy her in the cold, sober, light of day. They did continue to see each other for a short while however, and during this time M house sat for a neighbour of ours on the estate we both lived on.

One empty house, two young couples, a couple of the group of friends from the pub, plenty of beer and a bit of whacky baccy!!! (Give me a break, we were all young and foolish at some point!) We layed on the floor drinking, smoking and playing some silly board game. I can’t remember which one, I just remember that at some point G’s feet and mine were occupying the exact same area of carpet. My gut reaction was to move mine. He didn’t even seem to be aware of the contact. I immediately kicked myself and gradually engineered them back to where they had been. Just that smallest amount of contact had made my heart flutter and I remember telling myself that I was just being a stupid, flighty, teenager who should know better. The beer continued to flow and the joints continued to do the rounds. I had rarely drunk so much lager, I wasn’t really all that keen on it, and I had never mixed alcohol with the occasional smoke I had tried in the past. I began to feel slightly unwell. Then the doorbell went. M answered the door and came back to report that my sister was on the doorstep and needed to speak to me.

My journey from the living room floor to the front door is possibly one of the longest, most difficult journeys I have ever endured. I crawled to the living room door and then willed my legs to work before I was visible from the front door. I felt sea sick. The room was spinning. I was having a hot flush. My legs wouldn’t support me. Somehow, I made it to the front door and spoke to my sister. The moment I closed the door, I stumbled back to the others, declared I felt extremely unwell and collapsed in a heap, how very sophisticated!! My boyfriend just laughed at me. G told him to be serious, as best you could after smoking that stuff anyway. He got me to the window for fresh air, and gave me lots of water to drink and offered words of comfort. His care only served to further the feelings I was already harbouring and how I wished he would always be there. I always felt safe with him around.

Eight months later, I was single again. My boyfriend was not cut out for family life, had no wish to be a father, then or since in my mind. He had treated our son badly, but details are not necessary, this post is not about him. He had come back and given it a try, but at the end of the day, he was just too selfish for it ever to succeed. He announced it was over again, after which I discovered that he had been seeing someone else for the past month. Second time around, I wasn’t devastated like I had been the first time. He had done me a favour really, and the more of life I saw, the more I realised I’d had a lucky escape.

My thoughts though, kept turning to G. The pub we all used to frequent was across the road from where I worked and many times I wanted to ring G and ask if he would meet me for a chat and a drink. Given that I was just the ex-girlfriend of one of his mate’s I wasn’t sure that he would, so I hesitated to make the call. Eventually I plucked up enough courage to call him, and was very surprised when he agreed. He turned up on his motorbike, in his leathers, a Kawasaki 400 I believe it was then. Just to see him again made my heart turn cartwheels, but I had to remind myself this was not a date, it was just 2 friends meeting for a lunch drink.

Over the next few weeks, our meetings became more regular, and our friendship began to turn into something more. I would daydream about spending my life with him; I knew I was already falling in love with him.

We would meet at lunch breaks and share time together, just the two of us. This for me was precious time that I always looked forward to. Inevitably, the time away from the others in the group allowed us each to see the real person underneath the exterior that teenagers wear as part of a group. Not that either of us had ever tried to portray ourselves as something we weren't, or tried to hide anything about ourselves, but in groups at that age, there is a lot of bravado and scarcely little on the emotional front. I would sit and look straight into his eyes as he spoke to me, listening to everything yet hearing nothing. My mind was in another world, a world where we were not surrounded by other people, a world I knew I would never taste. Then I would go back to work with my head in the clouds. I consoled myself with the idea that even if I couldn’t have him as a partner I could have him as a friend, and that would be enough.

We would see each other sometimes in the evenings when I went to the pub with another of my girl friends and we would sit with G, my ex and others in a group, and hear those songs time and time again. Sometimes I would catch G looking at me, and wonder what he was thinking, there were never any clues in his expression. Maybe in hindsight there were and I was just to naive to notice them. He often used to buy me a drink because he knew how short of money I was, what little I had was spent on nappies and baby food, and day by day, I fell head over heels in love with him.

A couple of weeks later, he asked me if I would go out with him, I was on top of the world. I’m sure the word ‘yes’ flew out of my mouth far more quickly than it should have done, I just wanted to get in there in case he changed his mind!! In case he suddenly realised what he had asked me and apologised saying it wasn't what he meant. That was 3 weeks before my 18th birthday.

Our relationship, when it started, took off very quickly. I always knew that he was the one, always. In the early days of our dating, G was taxi driving for a living. He would often do a 12 hour day shift driving followed by 6 hours on the control desk. When he was driving, the controller would sometimes give him an 'urgent' job, and he would flatly refuse to do it because he insisted he had to pick me up in the morning and drop me at work. Free taxi, great. Even better than that though, I got to say good morning to him every day from Monday to Friday. I loved that 10 minute drive each day. I would float for the rest of the morning.

I remember one occasion when he had stayed over at mine. I was still living at home at the time, and my Dad's job meant he was up at 4am most mornings and out of the door by half past. G's taxi driving meant he would be up just before 6 and invariably I would be up with my son early too. G, back then, was quite shy around my family. My Mum always used to say he wouldn't say boo too a goose. (A few of you will see that there's a joke in their too!!) Just before 6am, the phone rang out at home. There were no mobiles then, only landlines, but it was most unusual to hear the shrill ringing at that hour of the day. Without a second thought, G picked up the phone, but he didn't say 'hello' like most people, he said, 'War Office ... who wants a fight'?

Within 14 months we had our first, beautiful daughter, and 3 months later we were living together. Later that same year we were married. Life was tough, very tough, but what got me through then was having G by my side, he made me whole and he made life worth living.

And today?

* He still has gorgeous eyes
* His smile still melts my heart.
* When he arrives home at the end of the day, I feel complete.
* When I look at him sleeping, I still think to myself, ‘How did I get to be this lucky in life’?
* Most of all, he still makes my life worth living.

Reason why I still love my husband No. 1

If you enjoyed this memory, check out my other Memory Monday posts from the link list in the right hand tool bar. I am attempting to add to this list more regularly, if you would like to join in, go ahead and put the button on your own site, then have a dig around your memories, you might surprise yourself with what comes out!

Meet my Better Half

I first met G 23 years ago, as a friend of my then boyfriend, and I was attracted to him almost instantly. Back then he had long hair, gorgeous, piercing eyes and a smile that melted my heart from the very first time I saw it. He was easy to talk to, but I never flirted with him, I was much too young and innocent to do such a thing, I’m not even sure that I really knew how to flirt at 17.

I had seen G a few times at the pub we all used to frequent. The multi-panelled glass doors at either end of the building led straight into the only bar. A single, large, undivided area that arced from one end to the other. The dark wooden bar, highly polished and shining like new at the start of every shift wrapped around the centre of the private, landlords quarters and the staff quickly became familiar faces. The heavily patterned carpet bore a history of countless scars from spilt beer and cigarette burns from those who had either drunk too much and dropped them, or had no inclination to fight their way through the crowds to find an ashtray and decided the floor would do. The walls were pale and windows down the length of the outside wall flooded the place with light during the day.

We always sat at or very close to the same small, round table. The order of the day varied little. Table - check, stools - check, cigarettes and lighter on top – check. This was quickly followed by pint glasses and/or shorts. The table we claimed as our own was to one side of the bar, ensuring that it was conveniently close at hand. A couple of feet behind us was the jukebox which was never quiet. It was the mainstay of the entertainment for the evening and it churned out hit after hit. This was in the days when vinyl was still used in jukeboxes, there was none of these electronic music centres then. It always fascinated me to watch the arm coil back, spin round, tilt onto it’s side and extract the next record to play. Just beyond that was ‘the mens’. Why is it that, even today, you can bet your life on the fact that the men’s will be the closest and the ladies will be at the farthest possible point from where you are sat?

No-one had a great deal of money, but somehow it never seemed to matter, we used to meet up and have a laugh; life back then seemed so easy in retrospect. We could come and go as we pleased, was answerable to no-one, and bore none of life’s scars that inevitably became etched on our souls in later years. Hardly a care in the world. My greatest concern at that time was whether I would actually get asked for I.D. in the pub. I was underage. Very purposely, I used to sit with my back to the bar in the hope that the staff wouldn’t stand in a quiet moment and actually wonder about my age. No matter how long I had been frequenting the establishment, I always thought I wore a guilty look, and would go out of my way to avoid eye contact.

Whenever G was there he always looked so fresh, always wore clean, freshly laundered clothes, courtesy of his wonderful mother, and above all else, he always smelt intoxicatingly delightful. He had no airs and graces, with G, what you saw was what you got, and for me that has always been a very attractive quality in a person.

The guys used to put songs on the jukebox, and then sing along to them at the top of their voices. When I say sing, that may be a slight exaggeration, and just me being kind, but the words were the same as those emanating from the jukebox, at least whilst you could actually hear them they were! Within a few bars their voices would drown out the artists version completely, and the entire pub, would hear their very own rendition for the umpteenth time.

One of their favourites was David Bowies, Let’s Dance. For those of you who don't know the song, this is the chorus:

If you say run, I'll run with you
If you say hide, we'll hide
Because my love for you
Would break my heart in two
If you should fall
Into my arms
And tremble like a flower
The guys rendition was always very lively, very loud and the last line was always the same:
And tremble like a floooooooooooooooooo ... WAA
at which point they would simultaneously raise their glasses from in front of their chests to arms stretched above their heads with gusto on the final 'WAA'

Another of their all time favourites, which still makes me smile to this day when I hear it, was 16 Tons by Ernie T Ford (lyrics).

Still at the tender age of 17 I fell pregnant, my boyfriend couldn’t run away quick enough.

When I was single, and pregnant, I continued to visit the pub with a girl friend, when time and money would allow. At the end of the evening, G would walk the two of us back to hers, and then continue up to the bus stop and wait with me to ensure I was safely on the bus before retracing his steps to go home himself. I often wished he had shown some interest in me, had perhaps flirted with me or shown some indication that he liked me more than I thought, but he never did.

After about 3 months, my boyfriend and I got back together. I learned a week later that G had wanted to ask me out, but because he knew my boyfriend wanted to come back, he held back and didn’t say anything to me.

My son was born 5 months later and when I was in hospital, G visited me with my boyfriend and another mate.

Not only did G have beautiful eyes, and a smile to die for, he was what I, and many people since, describe as a man’s man. Very broad, well built, and no sign of a feminine side within a hundred mile radius. Hands like shovels. Most often seen in those days in a biker’s jacket, jeans and sometimes with the boots too.

When he came to visit that day in 1984 at the hospital, he strolled into the ward, very casually, with the other two. His bike jacket was still zipped three-quarters of the way up, despite the heat in the maternity ward. He clutched his crash helmet in one hand and his with tussled hair and a slightly rugged, unshaven look he seemed pleased as punch to be visiting. An outsider might have been forgiven, at first glance, to have mistaken him for the father. I often wonder, looking back, if my memory is clouded by the way I see him now, or maybe I remember his visit that way because I already had feelings for him I was unaware of. Peering out of the top of his jacket was a gorgeous, soft, toy monkey, which played a soothing tune when you wound it up. He just stood there, with this thing gazing at me from inside his jacket. I lay in bed, hardly able to move after my caesarean, barely able to even pull myself into sitting position. I had absolutely no makeup on and had slept for all of a couple of hours that night. I must have been a real sight.

That was the first time I really saw his softer side. He liked to keep this personality trait well under cover. He didn’t like people to realise that it existed and rarely displayed it in public.

(This was a long post, so I have split it into two. Second part next Monday)

Holiday News

A little bit about my holiday to Tossa de Mar. Tossa lies at the heart of the Costa Brava, 95 kilometres north of Barcelona and 100 kilometres south of the French border.

Apparently, Hollywood arrived here in the early 1950s, shortly before mass tourism, putting Tossa on the map with the shooting of The Flying Dutchman starring screen idols Ava Gardner and Frank Sinatra, and a statue of the actress was erected in the old town in honour of her stay here.

The most attractive part of this historic town is the Villa Vella (old quarter) with its ancient defence walls and towers still in tact. Medieval Tossa dates back to the year 966 and in 1187 the castle was built on the headland to defend the town against sea borne invaders.

Today it's invaded by foreign tourists who delight in the sense of history and wonderful views to be had from the highest point of this ancient town. The walled enclosure, built in the 12th and 14th centuries to guard against pirate raids, has been preserved along with the original defence towers which have become the emblem of Tossa. The enclosure, accessed via an arched portal, is the only surviving example of a fortified medieval town on the whole of the Catalan coast. It's a delightful labyrinth of medieval alleys peppered with shops, restaurants and ancient houses, some of which are still inhabited.

These two photo's were taken from various points along the pathway of the walled enclosure on the way to the top.

We had a trip into the wonderful city of Barcelona and visited 3 of Gaudi's magnificent buildings together with a bit of shopping.

The Sagrada Familia, thought to be Guadi's greatest work of all and the number one tourist attraction in Barcelona.

Originally called Casa Mila, and now known as La Pedrera, this building was originally built to house apartments, but the owner had trouble renting them because prospective tennants thought that the irregularly shaped rooms would be difficult to furnish.

Can you imagine being able to live in such a magnificent, unique building?
Never mind about the shape of the rooms, I'd have a whale of a time arranging my furniture in there!!

Casa Batlló, on the same road as La Pedrera is another magnificent example of Gaudi's work.

From the outside the façade of Casa Batlló looks like it has been made from skulls and bones. The "Skulls" are in fact balconies and the "bones" are supporting pillars.

The building was originally designed by Gaudi for Josep Batlló, a wealthy aristocrat, as an upmarket home. Señor Batlló lived in the lower two floors with his family and the upper floors were rented out as apartments

In amongst the site seeing, I did spend some time relaxing on the beach, a novelty for me with my previous sun allergy!! Cruising on a glass bottomed boat to a hide-away cove, Medieval Jousting and Flamenco shows, and visiting nearby towns.

I flirted with the waiters for Elaine, and I have to say I took some stick from my girls for it, who were insistant I fancied one in the town in particular. A very nice Dutch born gentleman, who was living and working in Spain, but had also spent a few years in America and had that lovely 'twang' to his accent. Dreamy!

Another 1st - a photo of me, after my sister and my girls accused me of showing too much leg when I was seeing to an itch, just because I fancied this waiter. So I was going to do a repeat performance!!

Michael, I didn't forget your donkey either honey, I bought a lovely Spanish donkey. His name was, well I couldn't pronounce it so I called him Fred. I stashed him away in my hotel room, no mean feat as there was four of us fighting for space as it was.

After a couple of days though, he disappeared. I just got this note that said he needed more freedom and had run away to join the circus. I tracked him down and tried to convince him to come home with me, but he refused.
So here is a photograph!

Holidays

The week is half way through and my mind is firmly on my upcoming holiday.

I fly out to Spain on Sunday and still I only have a packing list in my head. That really isn't a safe place to store anything in my world! More stuff gets lost in there than in the Bermuda Triangle, I swear.

I really should start making a list, on paper. Better still I should actually start putting things in a suitcase.

My first ever 'girly' holiday. No men. My travelling companions are my 2 daughters, aged 17 & 21, and my younger sister. The plan is simple. Get to Spain, behave like teenagers. That's it!

Of course, as is life's way, there's always more to consider than just the preferred 'simple' plan! Other plans involve copious amounts alcohol, food and factor 60 sunscreen for me. I have an allergy to the sun. *help*

I have just checked the weather forecast for the next 10 days and the temps are ranging between 77 & 85º *ouch*, for the rest of the world thats 25 & 29º. Over the years, I have come to the conclusion that a high dose of sun early in the summer builds a little resistance to it for the rest of the season, so I have been having sunbeds for the last 3 weeks in the hope that I won't get bitten quite so violently when I get out there. We shall see if it works.

I am so excited, I already feel like a teenager. My youngest and my sister have never flown before and so the excitement for them will begin immediately. I have only flown once, 2 years ago when I visited the east coast of America; nothing like jumping in at the deep end with a long haul!!!

The diet of course will go out the window, totally!!! 'All Inclusive' holidays seem like a good idea at the time, but I'm sure it's just a pen name for 'I'll make you all friggin fat you greedy fekking gits' holidays. What are you to do? You pays your money ... you makes your choice! Why does my brain already tell me that because I am on an all inclusive holiday I have to eat and drink as much as possible to get my moneys worth!!?? lol.

The drinking definitely won't be a problem, but the food, I really should make myself behave. I should make that inner voice go on it's own flippin holiday, the other side of the world, but I know it won't. Food is one of my few vices in life, and I'm addicted to it.

My Interview

OK. I have been interviewed by the lovely Miss Understood, so here are the questions:

1) Single women…the ones who never seem to be able to find the right man…often envy their married friends and the lifestyle they lead. The company, someone to love and support them, someone to just curl up with on the sofa, someone to take them to B&Q or bring them a cup of tea in bed. Do you, or have you ever wished that you were single? Even just fleetingly? If so, what were the circumstances?

Absolutely I have, but it has only ever been fleetingly.

It is my nature, possibly a maternal trait, to put myself last in the pecking order of family life, whether that be what to have for dinner, or making time for something important to me etc. I cannot take care of my own needs until I am happy that everyone else's needs have been met.

Many times in the early years of my marriage I wished that I was single. Singledom would mean NOT having to be answerable to anyone but yourself, NOT putting myself last everytime, NOT having to consider 4 other people everytime I wanted to slip out, and singledom also would have meant being able to grab 10 minutes to myself whenever I needed. These thoughts were always fleeting, as the very thought of not being with G, made me immediately grateful that I wasn't single. (I know, I know, here's the sick bucket... do try not to overfill it!!!)

2) Is there anything that you still want to achieve or do during your time on this earth? If you were given a death sentence tomorrow, would you feel satisfied that you’ve led a happy and fulfilled life?

The one thing I would most like to achieve I guess is to run my own business, successfully. I aim to make that happen, and in the not too distant future too.

If I was given a death sentence tomorrow? I guess I could make a big long list about how this part of my life was unhappy or that part was not fulfilling, couldn't we all. At the end of the day, I would leave this world satisfied that I have raised 3 wonderful children of whom I am extremely proud. They have grown into lovely young adults with good manners, good sense of humours and they know right from wrong. They are all hard working members of the community, never expecting that they can sit on their backsides and the world will owe them a living. They have very strong family values and if I never achieve anything else whilst still here on earth, I will die a happy woman.

3) Do you ever worry about getting old? How do you feel about the way you look? How confident/happy are you with your body image compared to 20 years ago?

This feels like you're cheating Laney..lol... this is definitely 3 questions right here... !!!!

i) Age - I worry often about getting old. I get aches and pains in places that 5 years ago I wasn't even aware of!!! I hate the thought of becoming incapacitated when I am old, of not being able to care for myself. At least if the mind goes first, you don't know what you're missing... hang on a sec... I think my mind already went!!

ii) Looks - I'm pretty happy with the way I look now, clothed at least. The last few years, while finding life more than a little difficult to cope with, I let my weight run away with itself. Last May, I decided enough was enough and joined Weight Watchers. Since then I have lost 36 lbs and have only 4½ lb to go to goal.

iii) Compared to 20 years ago - Well me stomachs gone south, my boobs too, the eyes have bigger bags, and the grey has just started to creep in. The flexible bits are not so flexible and the curvy bits are more like detours in comparison, but what the heck.

4) Is there a secret to having a successful marriage? Has your happiness with G come naturally, or do you think you both had to make sacrifices for it to have worked and lasted so long?

There's no secret, it's a cliche, but you have to work at it.

My happiness with G was not always so strong. In the early days, it was quite stormy sometimes. It would be unfair of me to describe specifics when he has no means of reply, but in the end it boils down to one question. Do you want to be together?

If both parties really want it to work and really love the other, and both partners can talk calmly and openly about what they want and what upsets them then I don't see that it's a question of 'sacrificing' ........

A strange analysis:

You know that if you were to put your white shirt in the washing machine with a brand new red shirt, the white shirt is gonna be pretty pi**ed off when it comes out pink. Come to that, you'd be pretty peeved too, so what do you do?

You don't decide to put them in together anyway and sod the consequence do you?

You don't decide to just not bother washing the red shirt either ....

You just wash them seperately, you 'adjust' the way you wash them but you still wash them.

Marriage is pretty much like that.......it's not a question of 'sacrificing' ........ it's more a question of 'adjusting'

5) If you could spend a day photographing any person in the world, who would it be and why?

Oh gosh, this is a tough one. Who would I choose. I am tempted to say... nah, the bucket is probably already full from question one!!! So who. I'm allowed to photograph anyone right! OK, seriously.

I would photograph you Laney. I would love to spend the morning being able to rummage through your wardrobe and have a fashion shoot with you, a fun, playful shoot. Then in the afternoon I would love to photograph some extremely tasteful glamour shots, something gorgeous, in a soft diffused light. I might even split the profits with you!!! lol

Moving Forward

I've done it. I have applied for a new job.

Well, when I say I have applied, I have filled the form in barr one question, but it's nearly done. The job involves fitting, testing, checking and removing electronic tags. Monitoring from home, (I assume they provide the equipment), reacting to any breaches which are highlighted by the system, investigating the reason for them, and completing reports. The advert for the vacancy said it would be 'very challenging, involving a multitude of different situations on a daily basis, sometimes stressful ones' Hey look, I may not have the monopoly on stress, but there's not much in the course of a job that could outdo my private life sometimes!!! lol

It is £3000 per year more than I earn now, which is fantastic. The hours are not so clever, with 8 hour shifts ending at either 1am or 3am, but as the post involves working from home when you're not out and about, I reckon its not so bad. Finish work - collapse into bed. What could be easier? I have never been an early-to-bed kinda girl anyhow so I don't think the shift pattern will bother me that much to be honest.

On a different note, back in November I think it was, I blogged about an application I had made to join the Kent Search and Rescue opertional team. This is a group of dedicated people, who give up their time to train in search and resuce techniques, first aid, radio transmitting and a host of other subjects, all on a voluntary basis. The group are called out by the police and/or coastguard when help is needed to co-ordinate and execute a search for a person that has been reported missing.

I think the rewards of helping people who are 'lost' for whatever reason would be huge, and the same for the poor families sat at home by the phone just waiting for news of a loved one. I am a realist if nothing else, I know that occasionally the person will no longer be alive, but for the families, even hearing that at least gives them something concrete. It can take away all the whats wheres and whys, at least for a short time, and allow them to start their long and painful grieving process. I have always believed in life, in whatever area, that the not knowing is the worst part.

Having reached mid January, with no contact since sending in my application, I was feeling a little disheartened that I had not heard from the KSAR co-ordinator. Out of the blue, at the end of last week, I got an email from him, apologising for the delay but inviting me to join them in a Basic Search and Rescue training weekend in 2 weeks time. They are still actively seeking female members to join the team, as Russ put it "they relate to young children and old people better than big hairy men do".

There is a training evening two nights before on basic search and rescue techniques, which I can attend if I wish. I think it would be a good idea to meet the rest of the volunteers in an informal evening training session than to just jump in at the deep end and go straight for the weekend, so that's what I shall do. Am really looking forward to it. I feel, for me, it is something positive to focus on.

2006 overview

OK, I was sorta challenged to do this... I think.. at least if I wasn't challenged I stole this from Miss U who in turn stole it from rn_buffoon... so here goes!

What did you do in 2006 that you'd never done before?
I started this blog. I lost over 2 stone at weight watchers. I began a photography course. Celebrated my 20th wedding anniversary and my 40th birthday. Became a great Aunt!

Did you keep your New Years' resolutions and have you made more for this year?
On account of the fact that I have a REALLY bad memory... I can't say if I kept them! I didn't make any this year really, just to try not to be so hard on myself.

Did anyone close to you give birth?
Yep, my nephews partner gave birth to a beautiful baby girl.

Did anyone close to you die?
No, had a touch & go moment early in the year, but thankfully he pulled through.

What countries did you visit?
None. I live on the S.E. Coast of England and so I have cross-channel ferries and the Channel Tunnel rail link on my doorstep, and I didn't even make it to France!

What would you like to have in 2007 that you lacked in 2006?
Sanity. Think I have already blown that one though..lol

What date from 2006 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
October 11th, my anniversary. I have a fantastic husband, and every single day I wonder how I got to be so lucky to have found him. We celebrated with a champagne flight on the London Eye which my children bought us.

What was your biggest achievement of the year?
Finally doing something positive for myself and enrolling at college

What was your biggest failure?
Every day that I woke up and thought to myself "I'm not sure I can make it to the end of another day" Most days for the first 6 months, then a few less.

Did you suffer illness or injury?
Not that I am trying to copy Miss U but yes, I was a little crazy for a while... hang on, if I'm honest I was a lot crazy for a while. I had an abscess which the dentist didn't allow to clear up before extracting 3 teeth and ended up having my gums sewn up to stop the bleeding. Had a large cyst removed from my thyroid which stopped me talking at any level above 'gentle', but everyone at home thought they were in heaven, so 'every cloud....' etc ... lol

What was the best thing you bought?
My posh New Years Eve dress. The first time in a few years that I have actually enjoyed shopping for a dress... this one was 2 dress sizes smaller than last years!

Whose behaviour merited celebration?
My husbands; he put up with mine for yet another year!

Whose behaviour made you appalled and depressed?
A work colleagues who thought it was OK to sit and play on the computer all day whilst muggin's here did all the work!

Where did most of your money go?
Money?? What money?

What did you get really, really, really excited about?
I am easily excited!! Too many things to list, but I guess starting my photography course came high up the list, sad I know, but I LOVE learning, always have, always will.

What song will always remind you of 2006?
Damn, if only I had a memory, I would be able to tell you.

Compared to this time last year, are you: Happier or sadder? Thinner or fatter? Richer or poorer?
A Lot happier generally, (maybe less mad would be a better description); A LOT thinner, 2 stones in fact. Neither richer nor poorer in the monetary sense, but the happier and thinner make me feel richer in other ways

What do you wish you'd done more of?
Job Hunting

What do you wish you'd done less of?
Crying and feeling sorry for myself.

How did you spend Christmas?
As always, at home with my family around me, just the way I like it

Did you fall in love in 2006?
Tough one. I think I fell in love with life again. We still have our little differences, but not in the way we used to... does that count?

How many one-night stands?
None.

What was your favourite TV program?
Oh gosh. I don't watch a lot of TV really. Have to admit I do get drawn into the reality shows like Big Brother!! (cringe) but my favourite has to be LOST.

Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year?
I hated everyone at the beginning of last year!! lol... generally I try not to waste precious time and energy hating, it's very destructive.

What was the best book you read?
My daughter lent me a couple on serial murders, which I found intrigingly deep and very interesting.. Harold Shipman was one, I did realise, when given some strange looks by the nurses when I was in hospital having my thyroid op' that it probably wasn't the right place to read it though.. what d'ya reckon?

What was your greatest musical discovery?
That it is OK to do karaoke when I'm drunk, it sounds pretty damn good!!

What did you want and get?
My Canon EOS 400D SLR camera, (sorry Elaine)

What did you want and not get?
A new car. Well not new as in never used, but new to me. My rust bucket needs to visit the big metal graveyard at the breakers!

What was your favourite film of this year?
Memory, memory, why does every question require me to use it??? I can't remember which films I did watch, but I know I did!!!

What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?
I was 40, and I believe I finished my christmas shopping. The evening was spent at the pub, with all my friends and family, that had been secretly invited to join us, dropping in.

What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
Easy. Sanity.

How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2006?
I don't have a fashion concept. If I see something I like, I wear it. That said, G has renamed our daughters Trinny and Susannah, as they keep a tight lead on us when we are buying clothes!!!

What kept you sane?
Look back a couple of questions!

The little sanity I had in the first 2/3rds of the year was courtesy of my wonderful, supportive, patient husband, my fantastic Mum, and a very special lady who took the time to befriend me and encourage me, thx Elaine. (Had I known at the time that you were as barking mad as I was..... just kidding honey)

Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
Jack in LOST was pretty hot!

What political issue stirred you the most?
The appalling, cowardly act carried out by the London Bombers, and the fallout that always follows these events, where one government agency blames another, and they blame their lack of intelligence, or their lack of reaction to intelligence they had on another agency and so on.

Who was the best new person you met in 2006?
I think I have already answered that, and although I have not met her in the flesh, Miss U is the best new person I met in 2006. (Elaine, you can pay me later love)

Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2006?
That sometimes in life, no matter what, you have to look after number 1, cos if you don't, no-one else will.

Quote a song lyric that sums up your year.
Can you see
The honest questions in my heart this hour
I am opening like a flower
To the rain
And do you know the silent sorrows of a
Never ending journey through the pain

Do you see a brighter day for me
Another day
A day

Do you wonder whats in store for me
The cure for me
The way

Oh look down and see the tears I've cried
The lives I've lived
The deaths I've died
Would you die them too
And all for me.
- Daniel Bedingfield

PS - Elaine, as promised....

The answer to the "Whose eye is it?"

Meet Maverick

Life (and a bit more)

Two events in the last week have made me involuntarily take stock of where I am in life at the moment, and what hopes life has to offer.

The first was the birth of my first great neice. A truly miraculous event. From conception to birth, the whole nine months is one little miracle after another.

When I had my first cuddle with my new neice, at a day old, she lay there in my arms, all warm and cosy and sleepy. I looked down at her, in fact I could hardly take my eyes off her. Children are a miracle. Looking at her laying in my arms, totally dependent on other people for food, warmth, health, happiness and love, my mind began to wander to a time when I wished I could have been as care free as she was at that moment. I even slightly envied her. No worries. No hurt. No pain. Just this magnificent bundle of joy, wrapped up in the love of her family, with the whole world open to her. At that precise moment in time, anything and everything for her future was a possibility that was open to her. She could do and become almost anything she chose. It is a precious gift that our children are born with, I only wish the world always remained an ocean of dreams and reality for them.

The second event which has touched me deeply this week was an entry on Miss U's blog entitled 'Time for a bit of honesty' where she very bravely, very honestly, and very openly talks about what a nightmare year she has had during the first half of 2006. Why did this touch me so deeply? Not least because of the very powerful, strong and beautiful writing skills which she possesses, but more than that because there are a lot of parallels between what she went through and what I went through myself. Our root was very different, but the dark minutes, hours, days, weeks and even months were very similar.

Reading through Miss U's blog, so full of passion and the deepest of feelings made me want to blog some of my own from the time I wrote them, more as another step on the healing process as anything else, but I don't think I am that brave.

Elaine you are the most courageous women I know. You talk of all the people from blogland who helped you through those months. Of certain special people who were there on the end of a telephone or email, who gave you the strength to carry out what other, more fortunate people, might think were everyday, mundane tasks. You talk of hardly being able to function and yet, at that very time of your life when you thought you had shut down and switched off ..... you were there for me.

Little 'ol me. Barely able to function myself somedays. Having decided that to begin to climb out of my big, black hole I needed to get my feelings down on paper so that I could hopefully make sense of them, I was blessed enough to find a friend. That friend was you.

For obvious reasons, I had never shared many of my deepest, darkest thoughts with anyone else before, and I chose a place to write where I would remain anonymous to allow me to be very frank and honest with myself. Then you came along.

You took the time and the trouble to converse with me, at first through my diary, and then also through email. Where most people ran away for the simple reason that had no clue what to say, you offered encouragement and support. At a time when I barely knew if I had remembered my own name correctly, you did not judge me or label me. You did not assume that I was beyond redemption, or that I would never find my way back. You were just there for me. In my life's darkest moments, you were my angel.

Looking back into 2005/beginning of 2006 sometimes feels like looking into a different world. At other times, it can feel like just last week. Nowadays the clouds, when the come, are more of a grey than the jet black they used to be, and nowadays I can see them coming over the horizon before they are right above me, so I have made a lot of progress I guess.

Another comment you made on your post was about accepting that you will never again be the person you once were jolted me into the past. Accepting that the woman I used to be was gone, and more than that, accepting that I needed to learn to like the changed me, to become best friends with the different me, that I believe, was my turning point. I'm not sure I have fully accomplished that yet, maybe I never will, but if I don't I will die old and still trying, I will not die because I stopped trying to reach the end of the road.

Hell, see what happens when I start talking about real, deep emotions... I ramble. Maybe I should leave it there. I could say so much more. This was never meant to be an 'Ode to Laney' but once I started, there were things I needed to say. (Elaine, don't worry, there are only a couple of people who regularly visit here honey!! but I sure hope you are not uncomfortable with what I have written).

On a final note, get that bloody camera out and start shooting girl!! January's list is up you know, have you seen it? No. 25 is 'Newborn'... how lucky is that!!!

Flashback

Hell. Why does your brain throw random information at you when you least expect it?

Has anyone ever had one of those 'light bulb' moments, where your brain, for absolutely no apparent reason, retrieves some previously insignificant piece of information from your on board recycle bin and not only restores the item to the location it used to be at without you requesting it, but whilst it's on a roll, it digs around in the recycle bin and retrieves a few more items which it deems have some sort of link to the newly recycled information and stores them right at the front of your brain. Just in that part which comes to the foreground of your involuntary thought processes at the most inconvenient of times?

The reason my on board computer decided it was calling the shots - it thinks it's found a link with the present.

Let me explain.

I was visiting the little girls room at work, minding my own business. I don't recall having been thinking of anything in particular at the time, when all of a sudden I was bombarded with names and memories and information from my past. My brain had this little flurry of nostalgic moments and continued to overload on them.

The motherboard must have had a power surge or something, the information came thick and fast...

"Steve W..., - Stephen W..."

"Of course. Holy Shite. Stephen W..."

"Thought he looked familiar"

"Went to primary school with a Stephen W..., I wonder if it's the same person"

"Steve W... the landlord of football teams pub, of course"

"That's why he looked so familiar"

"Michelle C..., Amanda S..., Stephen W.... holy cow."

"Of course, it makes sense, I can see it in his mannerisms"

"Stephen W..., damn, why didn't I spot it before"

"What are the chances of that? It must be him"

"I can see it now. Hell, wait till I see him at the weekend!"

That was the gist of my brain function. There was a few more similar thoughts and they came at such a rate of knots I felt almost dizzy.

I wrote about the footy team last week and of having gained back some of that 'family' feeling I used to have years ago when I played darts for a pub team.

Well, Steve W... is the landlord of this current pub. I have been a regular in the pub and at the footy games now for over a month. At first I thought he looked familiar, then I thought he just had one of those faces and personalities. Some people get you like that, they are so cheerful, and so at ease with people that you feel like you have known them for ages.

The landlord and landlady are both like this. On one of the walls of the pub is painted the phrase

"There are no strangers here - only friends that haven't met yet"

And that is exactly how they are with all of their customers, whether it's the first time they have seen you or the 100th time they have seen you.

The more I have thought about it, and believe me my brain has been thrusting this info at me constantly for the last 24 hours now, the more I am 100% certain. He has the same looks, the same smile, the same mannerisms.

It is 28 years since I saw him regularly at primary school, although I think in the 5 years following that I saw him a handful of times around the estate that I lived on at the time.

It truly is a small world.

Fancy making a 'new' good friend, only too find out he was an 'old' friend of sorts.

Soul Searching. I always wanted to say this.....

I first read the entry in caps on Miss U's blog, a long while ago. At the time, I was writing elsewhere and used it as a release for things I wanted to say.

I occasionally go back and read it, and every time it stirs the same emotions, the same feelings and the same sense of release. I thought I would share it with you all . It was incredibly difficult to do at the time, but very worthwhile. My apologies to Miss U as you have read this before.

LIST TEN THINGS YOU WANT TO SAY TO TEN PEOPLE YOU KNOW, BUT NEVER WILL FOR WHATEVER REASON. DON'T SAY WHO THEY ARE. USE EACH PERSON ONLY ONCE.

1. What was missing in your life that you took such great pleasure in trying to destroy everything that I held dear? What did I ever do to you? You were evil beyond belief for so long. So many nights I cried myself to sleep and plotted my revenge. I didn't want to sink to your level and that is why I contacted the police. I'm so glad that you being bound over to keep the peace put an end to it.

2. What the hell gave you the right to do that? Did I give out the wrong signals? Even now, after all this time I do not believe I did. I was nothing but cheerful, friendly and professional. I guess you realised immediately that your advances were most unwelcome. You seemed almost embarrassed for your actions but for all your backtracking, you made me feel uncomfortable, you made me question myself, you made me feel sick.

3. Why do you blame me? Does it ease your own guilt. Is it easier to blame me than to accept that your own actions may have been a contributing factor, however small? Do you not think I have enough to deal with already without shouldering your guilt for you. I won't do it, it is too much weight to carry. It was not my fault. It was not your fault. It was not anyone's fault. It just was.

4. You are a selfish, jumped upped, self-centred bitch sometimes. Life can't always be about you, no matter how much you want it to be. Do you have no love inside you? No compassion. No thought for anyone but yourself. ME ME ME. Could you not even spare your own mother an hour of your precious time on the day that she buried her husband? You selfish f***ing cow.

5. I'm so sorry I hurt you. That was and still is the last thing in the world I would ever want. You are such a kind, loving and caring person. You didn't deserve that. I can see looking back what led me to do what I did, but I make no excuses for it. I was wrong. I was very wrong, and I will never forget how much I hurt you.

6. You are such an inspiration to me. You have strength of character that I admire. You seem to think you are weak, especially when you turn to me for help, but you are so much more than I could ever hope to be. You have the biggest heart of anyone I know, and always show such strength of resolve that I am sometimes in awe of you. You have been through more devastation and heartache in your life already than most people see in a whole lifetime, but still you unselfishly look out for others, and are always there to lean on. I love you.

7. If only. We can't live on 'if onlys' but I have shed bucket loads of them for you. I miss you.

8. I'm glad you came back. The time apart was too much too bear. I know it was a difficult time for you, a period of adjustment so to speak, but you made me so angry I had to speak out. I was the only one who tried to help you. The only one who supported you in the beginning and yet you pushed me to the limit. Then when I spoke out, you tossed me aside like an old, worn out jacket you sent to the jumble sale. Were you just testing me to see if I too would desert you? I guess I failed that one.

9. You are so cold hearted. How could you move your lover into your marital home all the while making your adoring husband think it was his idea to have his best mate move in? Those letters that the two of you exchanged, I found one laying around one day. I know it was wrong to read it but human nature etc etc. I sure wish I hadn't by the time I had finished. How could you be so cold as to say you were a patient woman and could wait for him to die? You knew it wouldn't take forever because the doctor had said if he kept smoking his life expectancy was not so great, and you were doing nothing to persuade him to stop. You would do that rather than leave a man you didn't love just to get your "fair share" You're a disgrace to the human race.

10. I am so proud of you.
