Bath Time
Following on from yesterdays post, here are a few of the photos I took at the Hythe Canal. There are a lot of ducks there, and as I was walking back towards the car, the sound of splashing caught my attention. Apparently, it was bath time in Duckland!

I LOVE when ducks dunk themselves like that. In Oregon, Laura and I watched them for 30 minutes one early evening. I couldn't stop smiling!

2, 4, 6, 7 are my faves. There is movement (wings) yet the body, or at least the head in one case, and water droplets are sharp. Important to keep the eye in focus too which is very difficult when the depth of field is relatively shallow.
Questions:
What is/are your favourite subjects to photograph?
What equipment do you use (body, fave lens)?
Any chance you'll start including the lens, focal length, shutter speed, aperture and ISO rating with each pic for us geeks?
Almost forgot...do you keep both eyes open when you shoot?
Aren't they lovely! I'm lucky enough to have a river at the end of my road, so I'm often down there.
Actually, one day as the sun was setting, three swans took off and flew over the bridge...perfectly spaced and silhouetted against an orange sky. It would have made a superb picture...shame I didn't have a camera with me!

Michael ~ Gosh, thats a lot of questions for a Monday morning!!
My favourite subjects: Animals and sports. Although as you may have noticed from my archives, I do have a bit of a passion for macro too.
Equipment: Mine own camera, (bad memory you have) is an EOS Canon 400D. I have the standard 18-55mm kit lens, a 70-300mm zoom and a 'cheap' ebay wide angle/fisheye/macro adapter, which is not very good and leaves a colour cast. My next purchase will be a good quality wide angle, possibly the 10-22mm.
These pictures were taken with my bosses camera, a Fuji S5 Pro, which he keeps telling me I can use for weddings, so I thought I should give it a whirl, see how I got on with it and familiarise myself with the controls. It's a heavy beast.
Michael, I have little enough time now for blogging, but sure, if enough want that info, I'll happily include it.
Michael ~ I always close one eye, I want to see whats in the frame, not whats around it. For me, it provides a much better 'feel' for the image

Photowannabe ~ They just seemed to be having so much fun, and I love trying to capture movement.

The first one is a masterpiece and the third one is a beauty too.
There is a scene in my novel Vegemite Vindaloo that describes the way ducks bob their heads into the water - I researched it by watching a flock of wild ducks one afternoon. What I describe in the chapter is EXACTLY what I saw.
They use their bodies as a fulcrum. It's amazing to watch - and you've captured it beautifully.

We used to have ducks. We got them when they were one day old. There was nothing cuter than watching them waddle to the water and take a swim.

What's neat is that you have different kinds of ducks. We usually just see mallards around here.

David ~ Thank you for your kind words. I was lucky that several of the ducks were performing, and for quite a long time too. It gave me the opportunity to capture the essence of their antics.
Evening ~ Awwwwwww, one day old ducklings.... how cute would they be to photograph?
